Re: Completely nuts, as usual

The difference being of course that those countries have Islamic governments where they don’t have the US Constitution and a Bill of Rights to protect them.

On the one hand, there's nothing wrong with marginalizing gays by legislating Christian morality and Bible reality (because that's the will of the people), but because of the US Consitution and Bill of Rights that couldn't happen so I shouldn't worry? Even though it already has happened?

And wait - aren't most of those countries majority fundamentalist islamic peoples? Doesn't that mean that true Democracy there (or even American Democracy) would result in an "Islamic Government"? (But we shouldn't respect the will of their people I suppose. Because they aren't people?)

Islam is all about control, oppression, suppression, and depression.

You clearly skipped Religions during the civics portion of your GED. But let's compare your characterization of Islam with some facts about Christianity and the US...

If the Christian right and conservatives in government wanting to legislate my bedroom doesn't fall into the bucket of "control", well...

If Jim Crow laws and the so-called "Defense of Marriage Act" don't fall under oppression, you could be right...

If "Don't ask, don't tell" and the Bush government's war on condoms don't suppress anything, well color me surprised...

Honestly, I like your rhymes but I'm not sure what you mean by 'depression'. Let's see — are you referring to the thousands of suicides of gay teenagers confronted by the massive, fatal destruction of their humanity by a government overrun by theocrats? Or are you referring to the victims of millions of failed marriages (children and adults) propogated by a culture obsessed with Eternity? I suppose there are other examples. Take your pick.

The differences between the Constitutional Republic that is the US Government and the theocracies found in Islamic countries are monumental. Your comparison fails miserably.

You are right —at a technical level, the USA is a pluralistic wonder, centuries ahead of it's time even now. However, without progressives like me to smack some sense into conservatives like you, it would inevitably lose it's wonderful balance: activism on the left versus fear of the unknown on the right.
