The proposition that you are trying to frame is false on its face. There is no "true American" in the sense that you are trying to assert. The fact that there are many Americans who are easily misled and who can actually be persuaded to vote against their own self interest is worth considering as a separate question. Let's not forget that Bush was elected TWICE. This fact is not lost on the rest of the world and is one of the reasons why American prestige has fallen everywhere over the last seven years. They are right to hold us responsible. This fact is a good reason to be fearful of the judgment and competency of a good portion of the US population and to reaffirm the importance of an informed educated electorate if the Republic is to endure. If we don't have enough good sense to vote for ourselves who will vote for us.
