It may be that liberals are afraid of "actual Americans" (and I agree with the other 'liberal' posters on this thread that your phrasing is derisive) because many progressives don't fit the mold most conservatives and "actual Americans" have decided is the correct mold. Maybe we don't trust you because the political parties you have traditionally affiliated with have a long history of race baiting, gender baiting, sexuality politics, pandering and breaking the 1st amendment with impunity.
As was made clear when a conservative leaning, "strictly constructionist" court chose to ignore numerous rulings based on the 24th amendment in it's recent decision RE: execution by lethal injection, claims of conservatives to just be wanting a straight-forward debate should be met with skepticism. Redefining history and moving goal-posts is something Hillary learned from the conservatives.
The problem with the constitution is that it's like the bible: written hundred of years ago by men living in a patriarchal society that condoned slavery and oppression. It doesn't apply to our lives today, as mucha s conservatives would like it to. Most progress economically and socially has been made in the US in spite of conservatives, not because of them. Next time a friend of family member is saved through a heart transplant, vaccine, anti-retroviral or any number of other essential medecines, please remember that it was conservatives who wailed and thumped their bibles as they proclaimed the end of the world during the years those technologies were being developed.
So it was, so it is, and so it shall forever be. All progressives have to do is keep doing their work and ignore you as you talk out of your faces. We've done it for years, it actually works pretty well.
