I agree that there is human suffering as in oppression in the Muslim world.
But there is a certain reality of the Muslim world: no where does it fulfill the minimal requirement of actually representing Islam. Every society is a hybridization of concoctions left by colonial masters and the elites they left in charge, or variations on a familiar theme. Yes there are laws derived from Islam implemented, but those partial applications are NOT alone representative of Islam given that Islam composes of a complete system which balances itself out and functions in equilibrium.
I realize this may be hard to believe, but it is a major reason by Western powers support Muslim dictatorships- so there is no effective representation of Islam which might rival the Western world order.
So yes, you can find all kinds of oppression, suffering, depression, backwardsness throughout the Muslim world. There are multiple layers of chronic problems going back to precolonial times, colonial times, and postcolonial times. Even there are preIslamic problems still lingering, as in female genital mutilation and more.
But the claim that wearing a 'headscarf is oppression' is highly prejudice. I'm sure a jungle dweller from new Guinea would consider wearing pants 'oppression' in that same light. With your same reasoning, they could call the Western fashion of covering male genitalia 'oppression' and might champion the cause of "truck ba##s" here in Florida!!!
