That's so inaccurate.
Barack Obama -
Illinois Senate 1997-2004 - Fought to disqualify every other Democratic candidate, successfully removing every other name from the ballot.
He also had an unsuccessful bid in 2000 for a seat in the House of Representatives.
Wasn't in office to vote for or against the Iraq war that he so vehemently criticizes Hillary (and, by the way, the vast majority of congress, since the war had already started)
US Senate - 2004-present (first term) - easily won the Senate seat because 70% of the voters were Democrats

If we're only talking real time in elected office, let's still play fair:
2000 - elected to US Senate after Giuliani (and the race was close) got cancer.
2006 - got re-elected with 67% of the vote - and won every single republican county in New York.
