In other words, what we all are saying is that the government has insulated its own record keeping so that it makes itself look good even in the worst of times. Why don't they just post all the numbers they come up with? Then all of us could do our own calculations, and see how good -- or bad -- it really is.

Much of the actual numbers are available at the BLS. We just don't know the formulas that are applied.
