Does Anyone Converse in Everyday American English?
by tomoser

The article was terse, well-considered set of comments as to why Hillary's comments were just matter of conversation and reasonable.

Simply consider the normal American English use of the phrase "God Bless Them..." in the context of a conversation that specifically has no religious context.

The phrase is most often used to refer to people or groups that are under-dogs, mildly incompetent or over their heads in a particular situation, or dedicated to a good cause without the proper pay, respect or support that they might otherwise deserve from an interested, but otherwise non-committed group of observers.

It's pretty clear she was 'out-ed' again for being rich. Rather than deny her host interviewer's obvious forced affiliation with her as a rich guy, she hit it head on to say "Yes, I am rich too - but that's not to say it's bragging". She chose the self-deprecation that yes, she and her interveiwer are rich, and being so - God Help Them in spite of themselves. By doing this, she admonished him for breezily touting his own wealth in public, and chastising them both for being wealthy in so public a way in front of so many Americans who are not.

But - as it would be disengenuous of her to deny the American Dream of prosperity and making a better life for our kids - she had to assert that people who are successful or wealthy have a normal guiding principal to build, preserve and promote for future generations. To not have done so would have been to deny the American Dream of all, and to obviously lied about her own goals and aspirations in these pursuits and goals - the portion of the American Dream related to wealth and growth for future generations should not be taken away from the wealthy

The media, and the not-yet-wealthy should not take normal idomatic language in a secular context, transform literal words for re-use in a religious context, and then use religion for making political commentary.

As the author of the article said - her use was reasonable. We know what she meant. All else is self-serving. If religion is the tool being used to extract, twist, and hype, then ultimately it is self-disserving.
