Unfortunately - yes. See, the new brand of Republicans - after having been defeated by the dems for decades, decided to take a page out of Mao's cultural revolution, but with a rightist spin. The objective of govenment became lecturing the public on moral issues and family values to change their culture. That was a significant departure from mainstream conservatism. Now the libs, having suffered decades of loss has decided to follow that Mantra (that is why Reagan's tactics is the one Obama is trying to emulate) but with a liberal spin. America's problem have been declared to be race and what the French think of us. Unimportant things like healthcare, economy, trade, globalization, environment are relegated to Websites - geeks can check it out, it is an obligatory check-mark. But the passion is not about these items - the passion is about changing culture. If you listen to Obama, both dems and republicans are equally to blame for countries ills! After pondering this unfathomable mystry, trying to figure out how dems are responsible for health-care, deficit, economy etc, I realized that those are not what Obama considers Americas ills. Race is the only ill and lack of racial dialogue the only cure. Since dems have not engaged in it much, they are equally responsible. So as President, he will initiate one racial harmony initiative per week and have the dems and reps hold hand and sing Kumbaya. If they refuse, he will threaten them with 2 initiatives/week until they beg for mercy. Flippancy aside, Obama and his supporters, believe that changing ourselves, "transformation", etc . is the key to America's ills simply because they have different definition of what ails America. Obama was partially correct that none of the dems big initiative were done due to lack of support. But now, there is large support for these initiatives - we do not need any personal transformation to support them.But we do need personal transformation (like like the right believes we need personal transformation to get out of the sins such as homesexuality, sex, and divorce which are clogging our growth) to get out of racial sins, which in Obama's mind is America's only problem. Every other problem he mentions is not central to his campaign. So yes, we just suffered through 8 years of culture-war from the right; now we get to suffer through 8 years of culture-war from the left. Meanwhile, the deficits pile on, the economy tanks, the labor base disappears, globalization eats away at our core, health-care remains muddy - but again, these are not the problems for millionaire lawyers, 39-year billionaire hedge-fund managers, 20 year students with expensive cell-phones with unlimited text message paid by their parents, or african-americans in Princeton; hence these are not what ails America.
