As in so much else, I am self-taught in poetry (and self-defined as "an amateur light verse writer"). I never tried such a disciplined course in writing poetry (not since high school). I just fly by the end of my nose, so to speak, picking up on form, meter, euphony and what not through my songwriter's ear and not through use of formal vocabulary. What real formal training I have in poetry, if any, deals with biblical Hebrew poetry (or more properly, melopoesis, my term for the combination of melody and poetry that is the ancient and original cantillation).
