Riding the subway alone is certainly "outside the norm" for 3rd-generation exurbanites, which I guess is how we are supposed to measure everything in the waning 'oughts. It is not "outside the 'norm'" for multi-generational city families, nor for most 1st-generation immigrant city families. Something to think about.
