Heartburn also causes cancer
by Paul H.

For anyone who is trying to reduce their risk of cancer, here's an easy one. (I wish I had known this ten years ago.) The fastest rising incidence of cancers in the U.S. is esophageal cancer, particularly adenocarcinoma of the gastro-esophageal junction. This cancer is tied with lung cancer as the third most deadly form of cancer, with a 5-year survival rate of about 16%. This cancer is caused by one thing: long term gastric reflux, commonly known as chronic heartburn. Anyone who experiences heartburn on a regular basis should discuss aggressive treatment with their doctor, as well as screening for esophageal cancer and its precursor condition, Barret's esophagus.
Part of what makes this cancer so deadly is that it is not screened for and seldom becomes symptomatic until it is well-advanced. (The other part is that it is a very aggressive cancer, and its treatments are also aggressive and debilitating.)
