Firstly, Barack is not a "devout Christian." He grew up in an entirely secular home and only joined a church in Chicago in his mid 20s as a way to engage with his new community and because church-going is de rigeur for advancement in national politics. But the blog captures precisely why he cannot win in November. Obama is the darling and product of the self-regarding eastern liberal elites (remember the "arugula" episode in Iowa?), a fact painfully obvious to middle America. Those elites adore a bright young worthy cut in their image who speaks in lofty sonorities and embodies the latest progressive trends. And they have a positive genius for picking losers (McGovern, Mondale, Dukakis, Tsongas, Simon, Dean/Kerry, to name a few). Bill Clinton was not their boy. They are blithely unaware that they represent nearly as small a slice of America as do the wing-nuts between the coasts. Taken together, Barack's SF comments, his photos in native garb, want of a flag lapel pin, hand off heart during anthem, Muslim father (?), Michelle's all-too-brief history of pride in country, radical pastor, etc, etc, will offer a good deal more swift-boat fodder than John Kerry could muster in three lifetimes. By the time the swifties get done mopping the floor with Barack he'll resemble a cross between Muqtada Al-Sadr and Putney Swope. Or, if you prefer, he and Michelle will be cast as the second coming of Eldridge Cleaver and Angela Davis. And the Indies will flee back to war-hero McCain. Mind you, I love Barack (and Cleaver and Davis, for that matter). I'm pure eastern liberal elite white yuppie scum myself. But please, let's not make the same mistake AGAIN. Do we never learn? Sigh.
