There is nothing hidden from the world Mr. Collins. The fact that we don't make every one of Brigham Young's firey quotes a tracting point does not mean that we hide it. I know you like to quote them from the Journal of Discourses, WHICH HAVE NEVER BEEN CONSIDERED SCRIPTURE AND LARGELY CONTAIN THE OPINIONS OF CHURCH LEADERS. The prophets were flawed men, and when only their opinions, as often opinions are shared with revelations in Conferences to this day, will show the same flaws as many of the men of the day.
If Brigham Young had wanted to make it a prophecy, they would have been written in the Doctrine and Covenants or in an Official Proclamation. You don't dare use that as a source to condemn us, because you know they are flawless.
You love to quote "horrible statements" from church leaders, which were never realized into the actual statements of the church.
Once Young fumed about adultery and mentioned saying sticking a Javelin in the purpetrators heart would be justified. I am sure you can find many such salty comments from people who have witnessed marital treachery, because it evokes a visceral response.
Such things are pop culture. To name a few;
"If my wife caught me doing that, I would find myself lying in a puddle of blood and hearing my wife saying 'how do you reload this thing?'" - Rep Dick Army (R- Texas)
"If I could get me gun and go and put her in the ground," Kenny Rogers "Don't take your love to town."
Now let's go over some horrible statements from your "True Gospel,"
You find Brigham's statements on African-Americans so repugnant, take a look at what Christ said to a Canaanitish woman seeking a blessing for her daughter's health.
"'I am not sent but unto the lost sheep of the House of Israel.'
Then came she and worshipped Him, saying, 'LORD, help me.'
But He answered and said, 'It is not meet to take the children's bread, and to cast it to dogs.'" (Matthew 15:25-27)
How about Jesus endorsing the death penalty for people who neglect to care for their parents.
"For God commanded, saying, Honour thy father and mother: and, He that curseth father or mother, let him die the death. But ye say, whosoever shall say to his father or his mother, It is a gift, by whatsoever thou mightest be profited by me: And honour not his father or his mother, he shall be free. Thus have ye made the commandment of God of none effect by your tradition." (Matt 15:4-6)
Many anti-mormons, like many others, like to separate Christ from the draconian laws of the Old Testament despite all of the New Testament Scriptures showing that it was He who was leading the children of Israel, (JOHN 8:49-59; 1 COR 10:1-4; Every Chapter in the Book of Hebrews). These laws gave the death penalty for dishonoring parents, homosexuality, witchcraft, and failure to abide by the sabbath day, and Jehovah authorized them to slaughter entire civilizations. The fact that Christ changed these in His mortal ministry may be of little comfort to those who wonder why He would allow it before his mortal ministry as the Great Jehovah.
Of course I believe not only in Christ's Divinity, but also I believe that Brigham Young is one of His apostles. Brigham Young did appear to have some of the prejudices of His day as did Peter the Apostle (Acts 10). It may be hard to justify by reason, but Isaiah teaches us that the LORD's ways are not our ways, and the Psalmist taught us to trust in the LORD and lean not unto our own understanding. When men fail to do that we get Communism and Fascism, Godless faiths that relied on Darwinian theories and murdered more people in a half century than all the other World Religions had in two milenia.
Mr. Collins, I appreciate your will, but the idea that these things have been hid from us, would be like saying that you hide these hard sayings from the Old and New Testaments from your congregation. The hard sayings are just as easy to access for us as the Old and New Testament are for you. The fact that we have always rather concentrated on the pure and simple doctrines of the gospel of Jesus Christ, rather than our own pontifications, is testament to our belief in the supremacy of Christ to man. Thusly, we (including Brigham Young) will not focus on Brigham Young's or Bruce McConkie's opinions in Church as much as we do on the Gospel of Christ, as taught by Smith, Young and the prophets. If you want to spend your Sunday going over them with your Church, that's your prerogative. We have never worshipped Brigham Young, not in his day and not now.
