The idea is to avoid buying substandard quality items just because they are cheap. Cheap wears out quick, so unless you intend to use it up & toss it, better to leave it on the shelf instead of wasting your money on it. Check out secondhand stores if you're looking for something cheap to blow money on. Why pay 'new' prices for cheap, imported junk? Wait until it shows up in the discount stores & thrift shops. Making the things which you can make yourself beats paying for crap...
