Few things could be a bigger waster of time at this point than talking about affirmative action. Americans are extremely familiar with and knowledgeable about affirmative action and, for better or worse, they overwhelmingly despise it. The idea that Obama might facilitate a national conversation about it is absurd.

As with so any other hot button social issues -gun purchases, parental consent for on abortions for minors, 'comparable' pay for bureaucrats, black ideology pastors- Obama's hope is that political moderates, who are far to his right on all of these issues, continue to be cowed by the MSM's insistence that "these aren't the droids you're looking for ... move along!"
