Den is right. Government has certain duties, and protecting citizens is one of them. How much we need to be protected from is debatable. I would submit that we should be able to trust that legally sold products are beneficial or at least harmless, and that they are what they claim to be. Because we live in a time of global trade, our imports should be inspected, especially of food and medicine. These are not "caveat emptor" items. The individual cannot reasonably check whether imported medication is what it purports to be, so that is a governmental duty. If we as a nation find it beneficial to trade with other nations, we cannot responsibly underfund and under-regulate agencies responsible for these public safety functions.
