Bad Study Practice...
by Kareeser

Seems to be a habit among experiments with far-out results.

There's more that goes into telling somebody's age than a picture. Physical height, for one.

Even if it was a full-length picture, you don't see the person in the surroundings, and have to solely judge a person's age on a white backdrop. That would be hard for anybody.

I've been a bartender, and I was busted for selling alcohol to someone I thought was around 25. He was 6 feet, at least, had facial hair, glasses, business jacket. He was 17.

The problem with any test, is that there is nothing, not gray hair nor baldness, that is a clear definer of someone's age. Which really proves that everyone should present their ID before buying alcohol. I applaud Tennessee for this new rule. It is time to stop punishing people for not knowing how old someone is by their looks, when their is NO valid universal qualifier. Its like busting people for speed limit infractions, without having speedometers, speed limit signs, or the math to calculate speed. It really is unfair.

I certainly wouldn't mind getting carded, if it also meant that there wouldn't be any minors served.

I think it is a good rule, too.

My local grocery store had implemented a 'card everybody' policy long ago. This let them

A. Avoid having inexperienced teenage cashiers determine whether someone should be carded or not

B. Avoid angering customers with inconsistent carding (who might otherwise be annoyed that they had to have their ids checked).

Once upon a time I was also a bartender while I went to college. I took a formal training during my winter break one year and they taught us to card anyone who looked under 30. I always thought that was a very good rule. Most people I carded were women, but none of them ever complained about being carded. In fact, one time when I did card a man who I thought was borderline 30 (he had a full beard) - he had just turned 21!!

Agreed. 18-year-olds belong in Iraq, fighting for our freedom, not in some bar.
