Mutual attractions
by businessanalyst
During my time living in Thailand I came to see a lot of relationships between American men and Thai women. I noticed for both sides, the participants generally felt they had never been treated so well in their entire lives. This of course said as much about Thai men as it does American women. Many (if not most) of these relationships that grew into marriage eventually failed when the couple moved to the United States. The reason was of course that when the women came to the US they quickly became Americanized. That meant, while the women may have known they were being treated better than they would have been back home, they now wanted to be treated exactly like American women and therefore felt aggrieved. These comments are not meant to connote moral judgment - just to explain a little of how the world really works. (And no I didn't marry an Oriental woman- though my wife came to know some of these couple here in the States and totally agrees).

This applies to large differences in socioeconomic standards, and your story has been heard with Caucasian women from countries of relative deprivation. You can substitute Lithuanian or Georgian for Thai in your article, and the story is the same. Socioeconomic differences do not explain why Caucasian men find a face picture of an Asian women to be especially attractive.

How are men in America treated by American women? How are Thai women treated by Thai men? There's a lot of room for improvement in both those areas. I'm certainly willing to believe that is also true in other foreign societies. I think this attractiveness of Asian women may more be a result of interaction with them than anything else. I remember the navigator on my first crew in the Air Force (just back from a tour on Taiwan) - all he wanted were oriental women. I figured they had made a big (and favorable) impression on him.

American men are sought after overseas in many countries. When I was in the Navy there was a running joke about how many ugly American guys we knew who would go to Japan, or Thailand, or Singapore, and be hounded by smoking hot Asian girls. More than one came home married to some knockout.

I spent some time in Russia and had the same experience (though not the marriage). All of the sudden I was a hot commodity.

Some of it is socio economic, but generally the perception is that American men treat women better than men from many other countries. Better than most Asian or Latin countries, Russia, East Europe, Italy, Mid East, etc... Though probably worse than many Scandanavian countries...

I don't know, much of this is probably stereotypes, but there is no doubt that the perception exists.
