Re: Right now

If I weren't married, and in your area, I'd be extraordinarily pleased to oblige, O Goddess. :)

It seems to me that going to Sweden, then complaining about the sex ed, is like going into a sushi bar and complaining that they don't serve fried chicken.

TruettCollins:
That the government and education system are over steping their bounds as set forth in the Constitution and it is just another example of the government trying to take away the parents rights and take over the raising of the children....by the way I get a laugh when people call me a conservative because I claim Christ as my savior, when on other pages I am considered a raving lib.....

I agree that sex ed is in many ways more the parent's responsibility than the State's(through the schools). I would make an exception for a very basic form of sex ed though. Identifications of diseases, explanations on how they are transmitted, and which ones birth control can block and which ones it cannot block, for example. The condom on the banana bit, discussions on sexual positions and alternative sexual activities though....well that to me seems like the state promoting a "well they're just going to do it anyway" style of child rearing and that is overstepping the state's authority in my opinion. That type of approach is one that the parents should decide to adopt or not as they seem fit. That being said, whatever kind of sex ed my kids get at school, they will be getting more sex ed from mom and dad when they get home. Same with history, social studies or any other class where ideology is likely to be a part of the curriculum.

In other words, you'd be boohoohoo-ing just as much as those ol' traditional Muslims in Sweden !

Does his concern have merit? You don't really say.

Yes, I'm sure they do

...since they don't see girls or women as human or certainly as being equivalent to men at all, but rather as son-and-heir-producing machines who are to be "protected" behind veils and heavy clothing so they don't "tempt" poor, helpless men.

Maybe it's a good way to clear your country of conservative Muslims, which IMO is a worthwhile aim. America should adopt this sort of sex-ed, maybe we could get rid of the fundamentalist Muslims and Christians, too!

Hey, it's a thought...:)

Agreed, for once

They can put them in private schools or leave the country, their call.

Yup, much of the deep south would start to look very de-populated :) :)

KG - thanks for the research help

Most of the articles I was looking at where published research in journals - no help without a membership.

I did find that the bottom 4 countries in the world were Mali, Zaire, Somalia and Nigeria - all countries with terrible poverty, war and heavy Islamic control of culture. Other countries such as Tunisia and Egypt were much higher in the rankings, so your observation that outcomes would be quite varied was right on. And still, no where near Western, secular nations.

I have repeated asked Muslim posters to direct me to a Muslim nation where the oft-cited "kinder, gentler" Islam was producing good civic results. So far, no takers.

So you want all Christians to leave the country?

It has taken us long enough to get to where we are and we still don't have a proper balance yet, freedom lady.

Some of these lands are very complex and some ( Iran ) are very very old civilizations. I am not defending nor criticising here btw.

I do not think that we, the west are helping matters with our persecution of Islam, we are just giving fuel to the more 'fundimentl eliments.. which is probably, almost definatly the aim.

I understand your anger and it will take all sorts of pressures including anger for changes to come about from within Islam, they will come no doubt and perhaps sooner than we expect :-)

Re: KG - thanks for the research help

:-) I forgot to make my point .... which is that most Islamic Governments ... well all? are simply right wing dictatorships ... no different 'fundamentally' than other right wing dictatorships but the peoples religions are not always what they seam in that many keep their old religions or integrate their old religions with Islam. Iran is a good example of this .... I wonder if that is where the great changes will come from ? For there are many educated and powerful Ladies in that land. I think that there are some important. secret, talks going on in Palestine at the mo too.

It is easy to keep poor uneducated people down, no matter what their religion, Religion is sometimes just a smoke screen, it seams to me. Take it away and what have you got ?

Our secular government is pretty good at using the public education system to achieve the same goals.

Religion as a tool of the elite for oppressing the masses generates diminished returns as the masses become better educated. That is why religious fundamentalists oppose education that is not under their direct control.
