I would cheerfully allow outraged immigrants their feelings, and just as cheerfully tell them the laws in Sweden have produced one of the most successful public health policies in the world. I would then point out that their countries of origin have produced the worst. Their children will be blessed to receive the fruits of this enlightened policy as future citizens, offering them the best chance at a long and healthy life, particularly the girls. Religious attitudes towards health care are a private matter, in my humble opinion, and have no place in public policy. Private schools should also be regulated to insure that the children are receiving an education that includes basic health education as well. Why bother innoculating the public against viruses if religious folks spread disease in their own way?
Bad enough that the US has this miserable hodgepodge of public health policy as a result of religious interference in health care, but please let's hope that Sweden holds the line, just as France is attempting to do. In the meantime, I'll walk the streets of sunny San Diego along with startling numbers of women wearing tablecloths.
