Frankly, I think that's what Sweden (and France, with attempted burqa-ban) are trying to do -- send a message to under-conservative Muslims that they aren't REALLY welcome, without being too overt about it.

I have to agree with Tsed, Hel, Hap, and the others. It's downright stupid to go to Sweden, of all places, if sex offends.

Outraged? Geez - that just breaks my heart...not

I would cheerfully allow outraged immigrants their feelings, and just as cheerfully tell them the laws in Sweden have produced one of the most successful public health policies in the world. I would then point out that their countries of origin have produced the worst. Their children will be blessed to receive the fruits of this enlightened policy as future citizens, offering them the best chance at a long and healthy life, particularly the girls. Religious attitudes towards health care are a private matter, in my humble opinion, and have no place in public policy. Private schools should also be regulated to insure that the children are receiving an education that includes basic health education as well. Why bother innoculating the public against viruses if religious folks spread disease in their own way?

Bad enough that the US has this miserable hodgepodge of public health policy as a result of religious interference in health care, but please let's hope that Sweden holds the line, just as France is attempting to do. In the meantime, I'll walk the streets of sunny San Diego along with startling numbers of women wearing tablecloths.

That's a pretty good argument -- but does the data hold up ? There's a pretty wide spread in health outcomes among Muslim countries. Though am quite sure even the best Muslim-majority countries don't come close to Western Europe. But can we assert the 'worst' bit with objective data ?

Right now

I could use a little Swedish sex...Um er...Education I mean. } ; >~ Or Norwegian, Irish, Mohawk or Scots... hell any sex is welcome and needed atm. LOL!

Muslims can go to hell as far as I'm concerned but I see nothing wrong with making these classes elective, especially if they are going to be controversial. That being said, Sweeden probably has a different definition of controversial than many others countries do. That's their business, and people moving to Sweeden need to understand that it is up to them to assimilate into the culture they are moving into, not th eother way around. The same should be said of the human waves of hispanic immigrants pouring into the US. If you fail to assimilate that's YOUR problem, not ours.

While I sympathize with the attitude that the traditional Muslims are being big cry-babies here, I can't help but think that Christians of your ilk would have a very similar reaction if US public schools started offering compulsory health education classes with this kind of content.

Tell us, how WOULD you conservative Christians here react ?

I thinketh the Christians would be in a mighty twist as well.

And now I have to go look up global statistics on maternal health, longevity.....

That the government and education system are over steping their bounds as set forth in the Constitution and it is just another example of the government trying to take away the parents rights and take over the raising of the children....by the way I get a laugh when people call me a conservative because I claim Christ as my savior, when on other pages I am considered a raving lib.....

So long as they grasp the 'raving' part -- the rest is rather inconsequential.

Wouldn't bother me a bit.
