The trailers were spot on about this movie--if you went to resolve the many questions you had about the quasi-childrens series from the 70's you will be sad and disappointed, but if you loved the show you will laugh your ass off......
The whiny little girl Holly has been replaced by a hot scientist love interest, teen beat heart breaker (actually gay) big brother will is replaced by an entreprenurial carnie. Enik is now a bad guy and Zarn is now a Sleestack (what?) in short, nothing about this movie is accurrate to the series and yet it works as great satire (Rick Marshall kissing Holly wouldnt be good for the oiringal show) and when Ferrell finds a banjo and starts "writing the song" true fans will harken back to the most bizzare soundtrack ever--banjo meeting classic analog sysntheizer and a set of kettle drums.....
In the original series, the Sleestack were often described as being many in number, but you only ever saw three at once because they only had three costumes....digital sfx took care of the problem in the movie...that said I didnt appreciate the addition of an "Alien" style inner set of teeth being the latest work of Darwin......
If you go as a fan, go to enjoy the movie as a parody because well it really is...somehow it is a tribute and a parody both....but it isnt anything like the original in characters or plot...this is indeed a disturbing new universe-disturbingly funny that is.......
Purists will be mad or even outraged...but hell purists never were any fun....
