Just Don't Care

about the movie of a TV show I never bothered to watch. Of course, I'm a guy, straight, and have no knowledge of designer fashion nor an interest in learning about it. I'm sure it's fine for the fans and all power to them but I'm more interested in the movie's attendance gender role reversal. Revenge for all those women whose husbands/boyfriends dragged them to Indy Jones or Iron Man? Can the ladies have the same persuasive power over their men as the men have over them when it comes to the big, testosterone action flicks?

But Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull was a romantic female fantasy (He'll remember you for decades.) I tolerated the collapsing ruins sort of like one tolerates television commercials. No revenge is planned.
I enjoyed Indiana Jones

But I will not drag my husband to this movie.

I didn't want to share the HBO show with him, and I don't want to share this with him. It is mine...and my girlfriend's.

I was at a party tonight, and a good deal of it was women arranging sleepovers after watching the film. Or lunchdates, then watching the film. Not once did I hear a man invited.

Sex and the City is that small box of expensive chocolates we keep in our desk drawer. Not really good for us, but really good for us. It is our decadent reward for putting up with everything that we put up with.

And we are in no mood to share.

That's an unfair comparison. Sex & the City is like dragging a woman to see a Dolph Lundgren flick.

That was brilliant! Bravo!

That's interesting. It suggests that SATC isn't really about, you know, SEX with a man, which would seem to be the point as well as the motivating factor for the whole works, but rather a sort of self-contained sex video game, using the concept, imagery, plumage, etc, but not accessing or even necessarily interested in the real thing.

It was never about men

sorry.

It was always about friendship with women.

Um, just kinda wondering about the title...

dude, I'm a girl and I'd sooo much rather be going to see Indy or Iron Man tonight. I don't like sex in the city at all. I'm going tonight though-my friend is going with a huge group of people and they have an extra ticket and I haven't been out or to a movie in a while so I figured I'd see what the fuss is about.

So that's the thing, it's not about gender at all, it's about how tastes differ in relationships. I happen to have friends who will all be dying to see the most crap-tacular "chick flicks" ever made. And I will usually end up watching them. Why? because I want to hang out with my friends, and there's no way in hell they'll concede to like, going to a rock show or seeing any of the movies I like. I find THAT interesting- how certain people in a group end up grudgingly molding their social life around what the others like and it's not reciprocated.

And for the record- my grouchy, mid-60s dad thinks the show is hilarious (and why shouldn't he? the outcome made it the most conservative show on television). He likes it much more than I do.

As a straight woman I would rather watch Indiana Jones and Iron Man anyday of the week over Sex in the City. I don't even like action movies very much, but they would be far preferable than watching the shallow vapid bimbos in this movie.

I would like to inform the world at large that there are, in fact, non-heterosexual men out there that couldn't care less about this movie, either. You want to see something entertaining with Kim Cattrall? Check out the MST3K episode devoted to the no-budget sci-fi mess City Limits. Not only will you get a lovely eyeful of Ms. Cattrall, you will also see Robbie Benson killed with a desk. What more could you want?

Good for you. You are just so much better than all those women who've enjoyed this movie, whether for the friendships or the fashions, right?

Whatever. You can keep your lame-ass Indiana Jones and its "knowledge was their treasure" line and flying saucer.

Bimbo? Look in the mirror, honey.
