Re: run is right, 'appearances' & perception ...
by run75441

Beathan:

I asked if you knew precisely what happened. I would also add that this question comes without regard to what Dean, Brazile, or the DNC has stated. Rules are not to be broken and yet the DNC did do that for Nevada, South Carolina, and New Hampshire . . .

I stole the balance of this to answer your point on Michigan breaking the rules:

Let’s look at the Delegate Selection Rules of the DNC :

No meetings, caucuses, conventions or primaries which constitute the first determining stage in the presidential nomination process (the date of the primary in primary states, and the date of the first tier caucus in caucus states) may be held prior to the first Tuesday in February or after the second Tuesday in June in the calendar year of the national convention.

Provided, however, :

  1. that the Iowa precinct caucuses may be held no earlier than 22 days before the first Tuesday in February;
  2. that the Nevada first-tier caucuses may be held no earlier than 17 days before the first Tuesday in February;
  3. that the New Hampshire primary may be held no earlier than 14 days before the first Tuesday in February;
  4. and that the South Carolina primary may be held no earlier than 7 days before the first Tuesday in February.
  5. In no instance may a state which scheduled delegate selection procedures on or between the first Tuesday in February and the second Tuesday in June 1984 move out of compliance with the provisions of this rule.

The first Tuesday in February was the 5th, so that 22 days prior would be January 14th.

Thus, the Nevada caucuses could be held no earlier than the 19th,

the New Hampshire primary could be held no earlier than January 22nd, and so on.

Iowa, New Hampshire, Nevada and South Carolina all moved their caucuses and primaries in violation of DNC rules, and yet suffered no penalty, not even the standard 1/2 reduction in delegates.

So why were Michigan and Florida afforded such draconian treatment?

This is what the DNC said the primary calender should look like, in their own words.

The new DNC Rules and Bylaws for the caucus and primary 2008 calendar schedule is as follows:

* Iowa holds the first-in-the-nation caucus on January 14.

* New Hampshire holds the first-in-the-nation primary on January 22.

* Nevada conducts a caucus between Iowa and New Hampshire on Saturday, January 19.

* South Carolina holds a primary 1 week after the New Hampshire primary on Tuesday, January 29

This is what ACTUALLY HAPPENED........

Iowa, New Hampshire, Nevada and South Carolina all moved their caucuses and primaries in violation of DNC rules, and yet suffered no penalty, not even the standard 1/2 reduction in delegates.

(1) Iowa

The earliest Caucus could be held = 1/14/2008

The Caucus was held = 1/3/2008 - A violation of 11 days

(2) New Hampshire

The earliest the Primary could be held = 1/22/2008

The Primary was held = 1/8/2008 - A violation of 14 days

(3) Nevada

The caucus was held January 19th, but was changed from second in the schedule to third in the schedule.

Nevada was supposed to be the second Caucus, ahead of New Hampshire, but New Hampshire and Nevada switched positions around, while Nevada still kept their date of January 19th.

South Carolina

The earliest the Primary could be held = 1/29/2008

The Primary was held = 1/26/2008 - A violation of 3 days

These 3 states violated the rules but are still having ALL their delegates seated at the convention.

Then there is the rest of the story

Michigan

The earliest the Primary could be held = 2/5/2008

The Primary was held = 1/15/2008 - A violation of 21 days

Florida

The earliest the Primary could be held = 2/5/2008

The Primary was held = 1/29/2008 - A violation of 3 days

The DNC is in violation of it’s own rules.

I would ask this about Michigan and Florida : WHY only Fl and MI were punished?

Why were the others given waivers? But why did Michigan move their primary up? See the addendum:

Davelias:

The vote does represent Michigan voters as far as the polls represent at the time. Obama was not going to win Michigan in January or February. Seat Michigan as it stands. If you do not like it, go after Dean and Brazile for breaking the rules for New Hampshire, Nevada, Iowa, and South Carolina. How can one wavier a rule?

Here is a thread that may clarify some of the things, I have been saying:

<link> Public or Private Funded Primary??? + Levins and Dingell's Message to Michigan

Here is why Michigan did what they did.

Gender
by NickD

There is no question that some have tried to use H. Clintons gender against her. However millions of her supporters have used her gender in her favor or as an advantage for her.

BOTH are equally sexist.

Both are eqaully disgusting if ones goal is actually equality.

No, I am not
by run75441

Beathan:

The only requirement was that they not campaign in Michigan, which everyone respected. Clinton didn't interpret the rules as the DNC asked but did not demand a removal . . . . "if such even occurred. I will remind you again rules can not be interpreted as they are iron clad. Only laws can be interpreted. Contradicting myself so it seems? The DNC has exhausted its arguments on Michigan and Florida. And yet some states were waviered?

Now you have taken a sexist approach with Clinton by interpretting her actions to be the same as her husbands. People resent that and I resent it.

Whether you like it or not, the end result is Michigan is a very viable swing state now for McCain as a result of the DNC's violation of the agreement it had with Michigan and of its own rules. It may very well be McCain in 2008 as Michigan and Florida push him over the top.

That's just not true.

We can rehash all of the reasons, but it was not an accurate vote. It just wasn't, and it should not count as is.

If you don't like it, go after your state officials for moving their primary out of pure self-interest, knowing full well that the voters would be affected by their decision.

Or myabe you can talk to Ickes about his vote.

Re: Gender

You know NickD you bring up a good point and could be a good subject for another top post soon. I have given that angle some thought as well. I think that there is an element here where woman do at times use what is known as feminine wiles or stereo typical female manipulations to try and get an edge, or their way, while concurrently asking to be treated with the utmost equity regarding gender.

Some might argue that with so much of the field stacked against women that it's fair play to use whatever means necessary to get ahead.

But,it's true this does occur and it is understandable that some would see this as a dichotomy or at least somewhat disingenous.

Thanks for that good point,Nick.

NightSwimmer:

Go ahead.

Include Florida and Michigan.

Hillary still lost the election.

But it isn't her fault. It's the misogyny.

Yeah...

That's the ticket!

No, Nightswimmer...Obama will lose in the general because of his lying about being a good guy for hope and change...when who he really is..is a liar who goes to an anti white racist church for twenty years.

They may nominate him..but he won't win in the fall.

I called the County Registrar yesterday to change my party affiliation from dem to Indy.

I am sure many others will as well.

Because so many more BO fans said they would vote for her than HRC fans say they would vote for him.

This certainly says more about his supporters being less emotional and more interested in the good of the country. Why aren't her supporters thinking the same way?

Many Democrats changed to Independent while Bill Clinton was in office so there is a history of that...

Dear Laurie, Please don't believe the slander.

Remember this church was doing and is doing good things for the community that Barack lived in and was trying to help. The pastor brought Barack to Jesus (personally I'm an athiest, but I can understand how important this can be to people).

Yes the pastor said some hateful ignorant things. That is neither the beginning nor the end of the man, the church or certainly Barack's personal beliefs. Don't you want a leader that can find the good even when mixed in with the offensive?

Finally, I doubt you believe Barack believes any of the racist sentiment implied by Wright, so I won't challenge you to provide evidence of that. However, when has Barack truly lied? I can see times where you can say he has not been fully forthcoming, possibly evasive etc., not truly lying. These are certainly disappointing moments, but I think the disappointment in part comes from the fact that he sets the bar so high with his ideals. Personally, I don't see aiming for the stars and missing as a huge failure.

Hi Blueshift!

Congratulations first of all on your candidate's win. I am happy for you. Really.

But for me, I guess it's that because Obama made such a big deal about Wright being such a mentoring like inspiration to him, even going so far to even say Wright was the man in large part, who inspired Obama's own book.... So that when Wright's real nature and the style of his preachings were revealed I just found it alarming and unbelievable that Obama had no clue about it.

It's still a great concern to me on so many levels.

But I do know his supporters all so want to believe only the best of him.

I understand that.

Again congrats to you,

;-)

Re: Gender
by NickD

Thank you for that. And it is an angle of the same point. Part of another angle of the same point is that so very many supporters of Senator Clinton wanted so very many people in America to vote for their favorite candidate based on the fact that she shared their same gender and if they did not they were then some type of a traitor to their own gender. This angle I found very discouraging with regards to our social structure today. This is also the angle that many found not only discouraging but very demeaning to all of society regardless of ones gender.

Laurie, also many of the New York senators supporters also tried to use the club of sexist allegations against almost anyone who dared say anything negative about their favorite candidate. When those charges and worse were leveled towards many of us we responded negatively. Were those negative responses always metered fairly? No . And that was wrong. However it does not absolve the many times gender was used as a prop for the New York Senator.

That was the main gist of my original reply. Hopefully you can still find some agreement there.

Hi Laurie,

Thank you, I really appreciate it.

I'm not sure if you saw, but I disappeared from that other thread because I was on vacation :).

For what its worth, I think your candidate still has a long and successful career ahead (I've been thinking about her as a permanent power broker in the Senate, but governor of NY could open up for her too).

As far as Wright and your vote in the fall, we disagree a little still. I see him as a good but flawed human being. Turning away from the good the man represented in Obama's life and the good the church does in the neighborhood because of those flaws would be contrary to Obama's desire to move past the worst aspects of our country and on to the best. Anyway, I have faith in sense of decency and fairness and trust the decisions that you will make.

I'd really like to see that top post you mentioned to Nick.

Blueshift

I do not know Gatewood from Adam.

Deny him twice more and you win a spot in a painting by da Vinci.

And just in case you try and say the quote is engineered by forces of the DNC, here's the link.

<link>

And here is the post in which the stranger Gatewood asked for the google search

<link>

It's this kind of disingenuous posturing that has come from you and your ilk that has caused many of the Obama supporters on the Fray not to trust a single word or emotion you try to convey here.

Just a thought. Try not to lie on record when you're judging someone else's honesty and character.
