While Democrats claim to oppose NAFTA and Republicans claim to not like imported workers, the power elites in both these groups like both of these things. Thus, that bastion of Right Wing conservatism, the Wall Street Journal Editorial Page, has intoned, "Let there be open borders". This indeed makes sense from an economic POV; bosses and landlords, who both tend to vote Republican, like surplus and expendable workers and renters. Similarly, those bastions of leftist, Democratic politics, San Francisco and NYC, have a surfeit of imported luxury goods from the deli counter to the wine shoppe to the auto dealer.

One could substitute "Redneck" or "Southerner" (think: JackDallas) for your "Republican" and somebody like NickD for your "Democrat". I don't think these are representative of the country as a whole.
