Second Fiddle

I had sung first tenor until five years ago when my job took me overseas a lot and the impromptu scheduling made it very difficult for the choir director to manage tonal balance. So with resolve but not without regret, I moved to the second tenor section.

Singing second tenor is much like playing second fiddle - long on work, short on glory. The job of a second tenor is to make the first tenors sound good. Sometimes it would be so easy to just plow right over them when they are at the edge of their range and we're in our sweet spot. It ain't music though. We provide the support upon which their high notes rest. If we sag, they sink and suddenly a perfect third is a perfect nightmare and fosters mutiny and mayhem on the high 'c's. But when it works, it works. I am now a better second tenor than ever I was first. Singing in the choir is never about yourself anyway.

Still, sometimes when we're singing there are notes out there that used to be mine. They are mine. I had them notes, they are a part of me and I was meant to sing them. But I don't because I got a job to do and somebody else has got to sing those those notes. My notes.

As I've said before, there is every reason for Hillary to keep up the good fight. I wouldn't quit if I were her and she is no quitter. But she isn't going to win on pledged delegates without a major stumble by Obama. And that's not going to happen. Michigan and Florida will be seated at the Democratic convention, but that will not give her what she needs, either. And the super-delegates will not give her the nomination if it means the defection of all those that Obama has brought into the tent and all those who remember Gore's loss.

But neither will Obama succeed by leaving empty handed all those who have so fervently and freely supported Hillary Clinton for so many years.

There was a time when I thought Obama was meant to be the Vice President. Young and articulate and patient enough to endure the apprentice role. I would not have been unhappy with that scenario. But he will and should prevail in this primary and that was my hope if not my expectation.

I cannot, however, imagine his path to the Presidency to be anything but the most daunting contest any Democrat has ever faced in my lifetime. But, were Hillary to be the nominee, the challenge would be no less great. This is the path we, as Democrats have chosen.

Though I have an enduring respect for both Clintons, I have never been able to long endure their ability to wrap the Democratic Party up in their own personal ambitions. Hillary's capacity to shed a tear was news, whether it was real or not. She is human, afterall. I, for one, required that confirmation.

The question for many at this point seems to be whether the Clintons would allow any Democrat to become President if Hillary is not chosen. They do have that power. They have the power to literally destroy the Democratic Party. Will they use it?

In the end, I suspect not. These are two people very aware that they are writing history and history will only be as charitable as they themselves manage. But upon finally conceding the nomination, whither goest the better half of this dynasty? A few months ago, I could never have imagined this, but now I see little option for honest reconciliation within the Democratic Party except for Hillary Clinton to be offered the Vice Presidential spot and as utterly uncharacteristic as it may seem - for Hillary, duty bound to the success of the Democratic Party and the United States of America, to accept that sui generis opportunity.

I say this after hearing it from many quarters, but mostly from Democrats I have known who have worked for the Democratic Party for many years and fear its demise if there is no accord. For them, the Presidential race is just another item on the list as they make their phone calls and print out their address checklists. For those people, the turmoil generated in this nominating process could translate into volunteers lost and votes forsaken in important local contests which is the bread and butter of the Democratic organization.

For those of you who think it will not be offered, I offer that Obama has little alternative if he is to truly present himself as a uniter. For those of you who think it will not be accepted, know that both of the Clintons already have a place in history, but it still is up to them to decide what that place looks like.

Second fiddle is a harder job than it looks. This I know.

Perspective....it's all about perspective. My desire, and fervent hope is to see the Democrat Party torn asunder, broken into two or more parts, each with its own separate and selfish motives and agenda.

Democrats are liars and bigots....in the final analysis we have learned this. They are what they accuse us of being. Democrats do not have the ability (in this particular election) to recognize the common enemy, the other political party. Republican do know their enemy and will unite behind their candidate (the choice not being the optimum, notwithstanding).

Selfisness, greed and lust for power will be the Democrats downfall. They will not be accepted by the American people until such time that they see the folly of running idiots for high office.

by such an accusation.

Liar, bigot, selfishness, greed, and lust. Is that the best you can do? Surely there must be more appropo and slandering words you can use?

I am gonna ignore this post of yours because it lacks imagination. Get on your computer and use MS Word. Practice sliding in a few words that may demonize us more than what you have here. Come on Jack, I know you have it in you.

I will be back in a bit to check on your progress.

First of all I just want to say that you are such a good writer ducadmo and that is much more rare here than many may assume. Your post just rolled along well and was such a joy to easily follow and digest because of your excellent sentence structure and way with words.

Your post was well done and it does make it such a joy to read when one uses such good writing skill and sentence structure. So thanks for that!

Onto your point about a HRC VP slot....I don't think it would work. The nastiness now between the two and between the two factions(BO fans and HRC fans) just has really reached a deep level.

I wrote a top post about this topic two days ago titled "The Dem Party will go the way of The Whigs", or something to that effect.

I addressed this issue and the strong possibility that the Democratic party will implode due to the machinations this election season,of Howard Dean and Co. regarding how the DNC front loaded the Campaign "for diversity"(which was the DNC's stated recorded missive) by changing the Primary Dates and Rules.

I fear the bad blood in the party leaders, all over the country, but especially of the DNC party heads, in Florida and Michigan, will not be happy campers if they are simply given a cursory seat ,only, at the Convention.

They may have to take it for the moment. But I do not see a happy ending for the party to this chaotic mess.

It's way out of control now. And the bad blood has already dried a few times over.

The DNC is hell bent on an Obama nomination. I saw that when I watched the long video tapings of the machinations that caused the rule Changes by the DNC and the ensuing challenges and requests from Florida and Mich. to be recognized and given some way to be seated and have their votes count. I saw Donna Brazil all but slap the Florida DNC chair woman across the face and told her to STFU and forget being counted.

I see how the DNC gerry-rigged this campaign and these primaries.

So no, I do not expect HRC would accept a VP offer if it happens . I do not expect she owes the dems anything now in any way shape or manner. I do see a Obama candidancy and an Obama slaughter when he runs against McCain.

Sadly for the DNC they oversold the faux imagery of' Barack as Messiah' so well for some democrats that they honestly believe that as soon as the rest of the country gazes upon his beatific face all will fall down and praise his name and vote for him.

His fans blindly actually believe and think close to this satirical imagery.

It's sad and blind of them. We have seen him. Many of us just don't buy it. Sorry.

But it is the blindness of BO's adulating followers that will be his downfall. They simply refuse to see what everyone else already knows. He is not all that. And McCain will simply win by default.

Hey, PainMan.
by Zeus-Boy

That's the beauty of the Obama campaign -- it's flushing out all the crazies and liars and bigots, cleansing the ranks of its dregs and scum. From what I've seen there's only two so-called bleeding heart bigots who've defected to that incontinent geriatric jerk you wingnuts are calling a candidate. Can you guess which two fruitcakes I'm talking about? I'm sure the democratic party would be only too delighted to see the arse-end of those two simpletons.

"this is the path we have chosen"
by baltimore aureole

i love your phrase (which i inserted in the subject line above)

you are one of the few who is not in denial about challenges this, year and the ultimate responsibility of selecting candidates with so much baggage.

its not impossible that obama or hillary will win the general election. dubya one twice, after all, and he started (and finished) with all the major media against him.

that said, there are large swaths of the electorate that will vote for a woman, but not THAT woman, or who will never vote for an african american, no matter how "articulate" his fellow democrats proclaim him to be.

this election well be less centrist than any in recent memory.

mccain wants to stay in iraq for "100 years", and i don't think you could find another republican senator, governor, or congressman on planet earth who would say that.

hillary wants to "force" the impoverished to buy mandatory health insurance, which raises the inevitable question: "just how deeply is she in their pockets?"

obama clearly has difficulty identifying good friends from bad (a trait he shares with bush), and his spending proposals amount to a trillion dollars a year.

its still not out of the question that gore becomes the democratic candidate and saves us from all this. if the first round democratic primary voting is really deadlocked (edwards - don't release your delegates!) and the "superdelegates" plan ahead, then the party can go to gore on the 2nd ballot. stranger things have happened, but i'm not putting the odds of this above 25%, frankly.

to defeat a gore candidacy, mccain will need a running mate who is more articulate and smarter than he is? condi rice? phil gramm?

or maybe gore will go down in flames if the current cooling temperature trends, and backpedalling by credentialed scientists away from C02 based global warming continue?

He honestly believes the world begins and ends with the fray. First off Zoo Batt there are many dems here on the fray who do not buy the Obama as messiah imagery. That is point one. Point two: check the polls. The dems are equally split between BO and Hillary with a slight current advantage for Hillary since the Wright expose'.

i sympathize with jack.
by Snolly G

new theory: when jack pictures a democrat, he pictures the democrats that he knows. he's probably surrounded by dingbats of the sort you reference. it's only natural that he develops a strong aversion to them.

how i sympathize: when i picture a democrat, i sometimes picture all the assholes, jerkwads and dickheads living in cambridge. i have sense enough to realize that not all democrats or liberals are the same, but there are plenty who simply aren't good people.

it's a mild parallel. now, i don't run into many of the kinds of democrats that jack runs into, but that's because i don't live in a nursing home, like jack does.

Jeez, LAM. That really hurt. Zoo Batt.

For all the hell you know, I might've been talking about Joe Lieberman and Sylvester Stallone. Who had you in mind? If the hat fits, I guess.

switters would write you under the table any day of the week, and twice on Sundays, so why don't you do your job and show some respect. Either that or shut the fuck up.

Your brand of ignorance pisses me off.

You must be the dumbest individual on the planet. Switters writes like a squirrel on amphetemines and you wouldn't make a proverbial wart on Geoff's proverbial ass. Now get back in your cage or you won't get a banana.

Not a very good response Zoo. I give it a 1 on a 1-10 scale. Were I you, I would have come back with something like:

Jack, don't you think the banana thing is a bit over-used? You're acting like a kid whose parents laugh at something they say and then they won't stop repeating it.

Then I might follow up with: Come on Jack...the wart on the ass joke just isn't funny anymore, and how is it you know about warts on Geoff's ass anyway. Grow up Jack, your shit is really wearing thin.

the democrat he pictures is the one illustrated by Rush Limbaugh.

It lives under Jack's bed and gets scarier with every episode of the fear and loathing show.

Jack is surely surrounded by good and decent democrats in his daily life, but there is no reason for reality to ruin a perfectly good pathology.
