After Tom's 2nd diary.

Oh, and unless you're just that obtuse, awfully nice to have you back on a regular basis. Obviously.

Get stuffed, maggot.

Flu for the past few days, Dawn Coyote did a post on a purposeful "cleansing". I call it a colon blow, but the end result is the same. Now sniffles and sinus. Fuck.

It amazes me how well this place endures.

I can't believe Alabama (anyone, for that matter) went to Huckabee as much as they did. The guy is only slightly better than Romney but just as dangerous. Constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage? Pardon? And we thought people around here are batshit insane.

Obama, probably. While the thought of Hillary herself in the WH is not scary, the thought of Bill in there with her is not good, mostly because it prevents new blood from getting to the executive. Obama must choose his running mate wisely as this whole experience bullshit is going to end up on his face.

blah

The Fray is...not an iceberg.

True, a cool tip does show but beneath the surface, from all walks, the Fray is packed with unique personalities well worth meeting

Cheers.

Maggot?

"Tapeworm", I should think.

Don't get me started on Alabama politics. The only way Bama has a say in the election is if Obama gets the Dem nom. But it won't be just poor blacks. It'll be young gays. Yes, we do have them down here and they're thriving!

Alabama goes to a Democratic "boy", and that one governor dude who stood toe-to-toe with the National Guard to keep the "niggers" out of college won't spin in his grave. He'll break dance. All I can do is "hope" Barry's the real deal. I mean, he's still (just) a politician, right?

In case you care, this is what's on my mind, fuckwad.

Dawn's a genius.

Feel better. I command it.

That BotF endures is, I think, a testament to its having its own life. But, to be perfectly honest, I'm jonesing a bit for daveto's post he's teased about: "Superstars Of The New Fray". Jonesing.

the place where I can rant and rave, so I seem more even-tempered (or sane, period) when discussing issues over drinks with my friends.

I think a behavioural psychologist could so a decent study on the terms of endearment people use, maggot being a good example. Be wary if I start to call you switters.

Ah, the cabin in the woods. I've/we've considered it, a nice place deep in the woods, go to town once in a while to pick up some supplies and to hell with society, but I don't know if it is such an escape as people think. A friend of mine has really emphasized how we are truly social animals, and I think that kind of distance from others would really begin to press in on most people after a time. I think the person who can really go live in the wilds and have that be a true home are exceptionally rare personalities, combining the abilities to survive physically with the mental stability to not speak to anyone for months or years. There are many that could survive, even benefit from that kind of isolation, but not in the long term. The other bad thing is if it doesn't work out, getting back into society might not be easy, unless it has only been a short time away.

We've done the acreage bit, and heating with wood is really, really nice if not a bit messy, but it does take a lot of work. Seeing that you would have time on your hands, probably not a problem, but still I'd say getting ready for the winter (assumes you move northish) would take up a lot of your summer days.

It would e fun to try for a while, no doubt. I'll stick to drinking beer and watching the Oilers lose.

"Maggot" it is, then.

A Plan

I'd be moving to a state, Ohio, that is really feeling the crunch of the housing meltdown, to, pretty much, the middle of nowhere, where most people wouldn't want to live/move. And I'm moving from a city, B'ham, that is pretty much immune to the housing meltdown, from a neighborhood that's ideal for young folks to buy their first house.

If I get a fair price for my place, I plan on paying cash for my homestead. Can't really swing the cabin I wrote about because I can't pay cash for it. So I'm looking at other possibilities. I've found a few that, were I to get a good price for my house, I could lowball the landowner by paying cash and, and this is critical, be able to live several months on the difference so I'd have time to have my fulltime job be working on the place.

I'm equipped right now to be alone a lot, and I've been in the situation where a wood stove is your only heat. I really do love it. But I'm over the 9 to 5 gig. I'd still have to have a job, but I could possibly be in a position to have a job I don't hate.

And I'm dead serious about farming. Just started this.

(That review was from the old fray, back in 2005, the one that Kevin gave an editor icon instead of a checkmark. Funny!)

It can work and if it is what you do I hope it does. Heating a place solely on wood is definitely possible, but a lot of work, so have at it. You will require some electricity, but your amounts would probably not be huge. Food can be grown, but some cannot be easily kept and stored over the winter. So you need some $$.

There's the hangup, what job? Remote is good because it is away from humanity, but to keep enough dough for food and for emergencies, which will happen, what does one do to earn money in the middle of nowhere?

Have you considered building your own home out of onsite materials? The most intriguing to me is the wood rounds house, which is wall construction of mortar and wood rounds. I think there are some solutions to avoid having to buy mortar, but I have not looked into it much.

Anyways, good luck and keep me updated.

We could have a building party

or a cabin-raising, or whatever.

I would just worry that you wouldn't be able to get some of us to leave.
