Yes. Yes it does make you a bad person.
by Parsa

This movie has no intention of making you think or interpret. If you want to do that then go fawn over another episode of Mad Men.

The point of this movie is simple. Exposure. Exposure to poverty, illiteracy, and tragedy. Exposure to ambition in the face of these. That's it.

No, it's just a badly made movie.

There's no need of "consciousness raising" here. All you have to do is open a newspaper - a REAL newspaper, not a tabloid. It's all there. If you really want exposure to the issues, then the best paper to do it is the Chicago Tribune. It's all there, every day, all the time.

The problem with the movie is that it turns human charactors into badly drawn, one-dimensional objects that have no volition of their own and are incapable of any thought or action that makes any sense at all. People aren't like that no matter what situation or setting they live in.

In that sense, it is like porn. Just like porn actors who are portrayed as a series of body parts, the character "Precious" is portrayed as...what? A baby factory? A toy that can be kicked into the corner? A punching bag? Is that all she is? Are we supposed to believe that that's all she could be? There's no "lesson" here, just the sick thrill of watching a human being bleeding without resolution.

Ultimately, such a portrayal is dehumanizing and the movie is exploitative in the extreme. It accomplishes nothing other than to tell us what we already know without shedding new light on any aspect of the story.

you definitely have not seen the movie then because it is clear the movie portrays precious as more then the questions you have posted. And yes, some people are incapable of any thoughts and actions that make sense. Example being people who were abused as children will most likely abuse their own children. People who grow up in alcoholic house holds and see how destructive it is will most likely live the same pattern, unless it is broken. Now does that make any sense at all, that a person who knows how destructive alcoholism is or abuse is having lived through it first hand would continue the same cycle? of course it doesn't but that is the proven reality.

Your post is nonsensical. I would venture to say that the director, the actors, and everyone else involved in this movie would take issue with your assertion that this movie is not intended to make anyone think. What good is being exposed to something if you don't then think about it afterwards?

None of that is written in stone. Great parents have kids that turn out to be violent drunks, lousy parents have kids that turn out to be terrific and accomplished people. You have no way of judging what's going to happen to ANY individual from ANY situation. THAT'S the way it is. *************** ********** ************ ********* ************ ********** *********** *********** ********** ********* *********** ********** ********* *********** Precious is nothing more than an "example" of what people who live in the suburbs think the inner city is about. No one learns, no one grows, nothing good can happen, all of the stereotypes are true...it's nothing more than a series of cliches and caricatures. That makes it nothing better than cheap porn. You just don't get to see the actual sex.

WTF are you TALKING about? Did you even SEE the movie? Its beautifully made, its thought provoking and it gives you hope that a girl who has been treated like she has can sustain hope and find people to help her. THINK. Good lord. Do you know HOW?
