It would be a mistake to try to extract a general principle from a single incident. Sure, no doubt, this lady MP is a hero. Come to think of it, it was a female security guard that took down the church shooter in Colorado some time back.
However, I work at a very physical job that requires a lot of heavy lifting (warehouse/distribution). With the need to be competitive, management is always trying to get us to move faster, faster, and faster.
In the last 10 years we have hired maybe 15-20 female employees and only 2 have been able to stick. And those two barely hang on, generally missing the max amount of work each year due to sickness, injury & fmla. I am all for the underdog and try to help them as best I can, but it is just not easy for them. One time we hired a young lady who had been a stellar college athlete--she washed out, could not handle the 8 hours of lifting & moving.
I am all for women's lib, and one of the great developments of my lifetime has been the removal of the bonds that kept females potential under wraps. However, when it comes to physical activity we need to be real.
