Preservation vs. Population
by stilldreaming
When discussing the conflicts of wildlife and ecosystems vs. humans, please do not forget to include the biggest cause one of them all: Human Overpopulation. We cannot discuss Kruger or any other effort to manage wildlands and people without mentioning that the original peoples inhabiting these lands had a largely stable, small population. It was high child mortality or the hunter-gatherer lifestyle -- in Africa, it's been shown that native women who used to breastfeed, are lean and exercise a lot, often go hungry, and as a result they "naturally" only have one child about every 4 years. Today, even in the best of worlds where racism, classism, poverty, lack of any kind of education (formal or hunter-gatherer education) would be avoided, preserving wildlife and the habitats is almost an impossible task -- because of lack of birth control, lack of freedom for women to have access to family planning, and the nefarious influence of both Christianity and Islam to forbid birth control.
