Reading the feedback on this article it seems strange that people are dividing themselves into drivers and pedestrians. Surely most pedestrians are drivers and all drivers are pedestrians. If this is the case are there any driver/pedestrians out there who can say that they have NEVER jaywalked? And are there any pedestrian/drivers who can say that they have never had a near miss with a pedestrian.
I grew up in the UK, there we was taught at school how to cross the road. Stop at the curb, look both ways, listen for cars and walk (don’t run) across the road when it is safe to do so. It is common sense but it was drilled into us (stop, look and listen) they even had a squirrel called Tuffty who taught us how to cross the street. I now live in the NE USA and still obey these rules. Do they teach this in American schools?
Are the tales of California police offices having to coax pedestrians across the street when the traffic lights have malfunctioned true?
