Sincerity is the new irony so it is really hard to determine why someone is wearing gators (whatever gators are - I am assuming they are not dangerous reptiles, though if they were I don't suppose they would ever be worn out of irony). By the way, the headline that prompted this discussion has since been removed. Maybe Slate editor's finally recognize that their self congratulatory psuedo intellectual hipster snobbery did not reflect well on them.
