I just had to see it, after all the brouhaha. I actually found it rather good. Clearly She is disturbed, and the case can be made that she is a misogynist, brought on by her self-loathing, grief, and sitting in an isolated cabin working on a book about witch-trials.
But if anything, by showing her descent into madness and self-mutilation, and her husband's futile and counter-productive attempts to "control" chaos, Trier is making an anti-misogynist statement. It's not like I've heard of anyone who's seen this (or any of his other supposedly misogynistic movies) come out of the cinema transformed into a raging woman-hater; on the contrary, as evidenced by almost all the comments and articles on this site and others. Surely that is the true measure of art: the response it provokes in its audience. If von Trier presents an argument that you vehemently disagree with, and everyone else has the same reaction, then that reaction was likely the true argument to begin with.
