Is the pig learning to whistle or is he just getting annoyed?

Good one. I remember it as wrestling with the pig, who enjoys it, while the opponent just gets muddy and annoyed.

Yeah, I thought the animal saying referring to futile endeavors was about teaching the donkey to talk (or sing). Probably there are many. Apropos of pigs, Churchill was semi-famously a fan, as one occasionally sees his quote around:

"I like pigs. Dogs look up to us. Cats look down on us. Pigs treat us as equals."

But then he was always good for a one-liner. There's a story that when he was in charge of the Admiralty, one of his subordinates said that some change or other would not be in keeping with naval tradition. Churchill supposedly snorted in response that naval tradition amounted to "rum, buggery, and the lash." That's one of those lines that, even if he never said it, he should have.

I used a Churchill line (or attributed to him anyway) once....

pissy bitch of an ex-girlfriend of a buddy of mine caught up with me in a bar. I basically told her she was bad for him and glad he dumped her. She yelled "So, who cares what you think? You're drunk!"

and I said "Yes, I'm drunk...and you're ugly...but in the morning, I'll be sober!"

Isn't there also the one about some lady who was displeased with him telling him "Sir, if I was your wife, I'd poison your coffee", and him replying "Madam, if I was your husband, I'd drink it" ?

Talking about spousal one-liners, one of my favorite ones came from friend who was having a big argument with his wife...something about place to take us to dinner or something, and he was insisting his choices made more sense and she was disagreeing. Eventually he turned to her and said "honey, let's agree that I have better taste -- look at what I married and look at what you married !"
