Some things old are not new again
by MarkD

This would be the same former Attorney General for NY who went after Dick Grasso for abiding by the terms of a legal contract that Spitzer opposed, and was shot down by the courts if I recall correctly. The unindicted felon, client number 9 if I recall correctly, who volated the Mann act?

Yes, be all means, explain to me why a voluntary association should not be allowed a voice in the interests of its members. I'm not a lawyer. Mr Spitzer is a lawyer. Mr Spitzer is a bully, an unscrupulous Nifong minus the charm.

All sarcasm aside, why inflict this drivel on your audience? The First Amendment exists, much to the chagrin of Mr Spitzer.

Except the point he is addressing is allowing corporation and money to be "individuals" and they most certainly are not. I cannot lock a corporation in jail when it breaks the law and money is about as fluid as a fuel can be. Spitzer is hardly the first lawyer or judge to see the dangers of allowing a group of people to be treated with the same rights and privledges as a single person not the first person to be concerned about money in politics.

As to the reminder to all of us that Spitzer paid for sex...big deal. It is not related to the conversation at all--not more than a judge caught speeding or drinking and driving...the idea that having been convicted of an unrelated (and often victimless) crime is used to try and remove credibility from the speaker.....if only people took the George W Bush DUI as seriously as Spitzers expensive bedroom antics.

Spitzer abused his position as Attorney General, using the power of the state, and resources of the taxpayers, to force corporations to spend their owner's money to defend themselves. I prefer loser pays, but the legislatures are owned by the lawyers. Corporate officers most certainly can go to jail for crimes, prosecutors never do.

What's the point about Bush? He got a deal on his DUI because of political connections. Yes. Was it a factor in the 2000 election? Yes. Perhaps we should talk about Teddy Kennedy if we want to bemoan the unfairness of political connections. I have to believe that Gore would have won if Bush had killed someone.

Which leads to Spitzer's hypocrisy. Sorry, I'll not take client #9 seriously ever again. It's unfair, I know.

##### We pay for an AG to investigate criminal activities--Spitzer went after legit targets--companies which stood accused of criminal activities. Sorry they had to pay to defend themselves--thems the breaks and I assure you the cost of the lawyers is a built in business expense of their products and services. When the state takes anyone to court you need to pay your own expenses even if you win......I know many people who eventually were vindicated of charges but still had to pay their lawyers (and wanna talk about stock brokers being paid whether or not the investment pays off?).
