speaking of situational ethics...

Re: Royko rolls over and smiles

Kneejerk response from me. Recent Pavlovian conditioning has caused me to assume anyone troubled by the mechanics of the Dem primaries was and is an angry Senator Clinton supporter. My bad.

Axelrod's the goods.

McCain's campaign reminds me off a drunk walking down a hotel hallway, trying one door after another, looking for his room.

I note two references earlier to Mike Royko's pro-gun posture. Granted, I have only been to Chicago a couple times, but I have read as much Royko as I could find. The piece which sticks in my mind was his column immediately after Bobby Kennedy was shot (How about Gun as our Symbol? 06/06/1968) which is decidedly not pro-gun. Any references to articles I have not read on this subject?

I loved Mike Royko so much that I would have had extra helpings of Czernina for breakfast with him anytime, if he had only asked.

I was being somewhat tongue-in-cheek.

Mike used to say that he wanted to mount a bazooka on his car for tricky traffic situations. He said that if his neighbor was granted the right to own a handgun, then he should be allowed to mount a machine gun by his bed because his eyesight wasn't good. I think jackd was talking about these things when suggesting Mike may have leaned toward McCain.

Royko would never be called a gun-lover, but he also took a pragmatic view....

"Strict gun laws are about as effective as strict drug laws....It pains me to say this but the NRA seems to be right: The cities and states that have the toughest gun laws have the most murder and mayhem."

Between his marches in late 60s Selma and getting mugged in the doorway of his condo in late 80s Chicago, I think he got a little more symapthetic to the issue of gun ownership. I think he revisited the 2nd Amendment quite a few times in his columns. Worth a google anyway.

It just amazes me how little Americans attend to voting as a nonpartisan practice. If an abuse serves their preferred candidate or team, it is OK and anybody whining about it is........well, just a whiner.

The Economist Magazine ranks nations by the democracy of their elections each year. The US came in 19th in the last ranking I saw. 19th.

We need national standards, laws that invite voter participation and take out any opportunity for candidates or parties to manipulate the process.

What do you think the chances are that we'll get them, now that we've graduated into having our political parties voiding votes by the million?

Mike wasn't pro-gun. My comment, like his column, was ironic.

Mike and Studs are having a beer tonight. God rest them.

A nice thought Savory.

Mike was way too young.

Studs lived a good long life.

And if there is a Billy Goat in heaven, you know who's elbow to elbow at the counter now.
