sawbones:
So no Dem President has gone to the White House without winning WV since 1916? So I got it partially wrong? So what? The probability of that streak being broken is high; but even so, Obama still is not taking those with him who are considered the working-class.
He has a problem in appeal to them and no parsing of words or stats by anyone can change it. One AP poll showed he was unfavorably viewed by white adults of the working class and up from last November. My own observations in Michigan and rundeep's in PA, I would not sneer at or take it so lightly. Other polls have suggested a high cross over to McCain if Clinton is not selected or an attitude of not voting.
PA: “They just can't identify with him, they haven't found anything they can relate to,” Richards said. Exit polls showed a quarter of Clinton supporters said they might vote for McCain or simply not vote if Obama was the Democratic nominee.
This has carried through in Michigan also. In 2000, Gore lost the working class by 17% and in 2004, Kerry lost it by 24%. Axelrod makes no pretense of attempting to win the working class and leaves them aside.
“Let's understand – the white working class has gone to the Republican nominee for many elections,” Axelrod told National Public Radio. “This is not new. Democratic candidates don't rely solely on those votes.”
On the other hand, McCain has targeted them as part of a winning coalition. I do not believe this makes for a very good strategy. So should we loose them by 30% when ~120 million of them make-up 40% of the population?
Futhermore, we need to somehow mitigate the issue of race as some will still vote by color.
"Part of the problem for Obama, who would be the first black U.S. president, is uneasiness about race. The exit polls showed nearly 20 percent of voters in Pennsylvania said race was important to them, and they heavily backed Clinton."
“Let's not pretend, some of it is race,” pollster John Zogby said. “Among some ethnic voters, there will be difficulty accepting an African-American, especially when he's off message and on the defensive the way Obama was the last few weeks.”
I want to win back the White House and stop this slippage and Obama is dragging a lot of baggage that is not going to be done away with regardless whether it is legit or not. I see no more negatives to Clinton as I see in Obama. It could work and why would you write off a candidate who trails Obama by 7% in popular polls and gaining?
