In Todd Purdum's Vanity Fair piece on Palin, which is the basis for my post below, he speculated that she may not run for re-election, and while leaving open the possibility of a run for the White House in 2012, he also suggested that...well, here I'll just C&P it...

She may decide that she does not need office in order to have great influence—any more than Rush Limbaugh does.

Sarah Palin has the opportunity to become fabulously rich, and powerful, without ever running for office again. Since she'll get trounced if nominated in '12, she might be better off just doing the speaking tour, and maybe hosting her own satellite radio show.

The fact that she can be considered "powerful" is more evidence that the subject line of your post below can be answered strongly in the affirmative.

Doing this so she could run for president this would be an odd thing to say:

Maybe she's just tired of being in the spotlight and wants to go incognito for a while. I mean I'd love to see her run in 2012 so we could watch the bloodsport of her trying to debate Obama, but I suppose I'd only be slightly less happy if she turned into a Ann Coulter -lite and just became a FOX talking head because A) I never watch FOX and B) I would happily await all the Daily Show jokes that would surely create. So basically she would cease to exist for me, except as a punch line....almost like now.

She will become very rich filling the fantasies of white, bible loving conservative males from 12-90 in the heartland with a radio show, reality show, beauty pageant and sex education videos. The tundra tart will not go away...

Wouldn't she have to be taught to string a thought together? I mean, her fans like her now, but when they listen to her talk for any length of time, surely even they will wind up saying "WTF did she say, Maude?"

The Barracuda never makes a move without locking onto some specific prey. She knows what she's doing. It would be infinitely better if she continued to tie her hands with a sinking governorship. That she has the sheer nerve to give up her office is a bad, bad sign. From now on, she will take Obama on frontally. He won't be able to make a move without being bitten by the Barracuda.

I told you last fall that the real winner of the election was Sarah Palin. No woman since Eva Peron has ever been catapulted so swiftly and so improbably into power over an entire nation.

Okay, I confess. She's been making regular trips to Dallas to see me. I tried to end it, telling her that I didn't want to be responsible for her neglecting her duty as governor. I told her I could not keep seeing her as long as she is Governor of Alaska.

You apparently have never heard the saying...be careful what you hope for. Palin would turn Obama inside out in a debate.
