I applied in New Haven many years ago and was absolutely disgusted when I had to put on my test paper a number which corresponded to my race. I didn't want to be hired based on my race, but rather my abilities and my genuine ability to contribute to the fire service as a whole. Hirings and promotions should be based on an individuals abilities and knowledge to perform the job at hand. Not their race. May the best person win the race. As MLK stated, judge an individual not by the color of their skin, but the content of their character. I truly believe in that statement and live by it everyday.

We've had this discussion with him some time ago, and it all goes to the fact that he believes he achieved everything in his life because of unfair advantages given to him - being the white male and all. So, naturally, he wants to punish all white (and asian) males for this feeling.

Ranging from work done by various Federal Reserve Banks on mtg lending to Chicago Housing Authority on housing discrimination, to differentiated prosecutions and judicial outcomes, to classroom preferences and even the recent study I cited which demonstrates that white males invariably received unearned preference in subjective evaluations.

I finally read the NYT article. I had to go through the pain of filling all their crap. And after I read it- shit this article means nothing. There is no explanation on the the difference (how large is it), no explanation on who scored for who, no explanation on who was presenting the stuff (at least we could see their faces and hear them talk) - and even then, there is no attempt to find out WHY the people voted for the white guy.
