Re: Honest question

Hillary does believe that she is the best person to fix America's problems so she has fought very hard. Is that ambitious? Yes, but no more ambitious than a President actually needs to be. She won't win at all costs, though. That's why Hillary and Obama have agreed to change the Dems debate format. They don't actually attack each other any more, they highlight their strengths and their records instead, and why that makes them the better choice of two great cadidates.

McCain on the other hand, has indeed changed his message in order to win the nomination. He has made a lot of compromises since McCain 2000. This is the reality of a Republican party where the fringes were banded together for control. He has kept the lid on long enough to see those fringes fall apart, but whether the old firebrand McCain will come back (or can) at this point is the big question.

I would have preferred Biden, but can vote for Obama and have hope for a good leader. Hillary I will vote for, but with a little less enthusiasm.

I hear your sincerity. Can you spell B I L L? These two have been a tag team for decades: one lies, and the other swears to it. This is the golden couple that gave America "political" correctness. I have never figured out why it is the duty of a citizen to be politically, rather than morally, correct - have you? Another gem from the Duo is their implementation of the 'tolerance commandment'; the fact is that tolerance is NOT a 'fruit of the Spririt': it is TEMPERANCE, Self Control, William.. Tolerance, on the other hand, as an Engineering term, means the range of pressure that can be applied before a thing collapses. A farmer might simply say "BS"; some of us might say it means putting up with something because you lack the moral fortitude to stand against it. In its extreme, it is APATHY: going along to get along; the French surrendering to the Nazis..Finally, HRC & CO. gave us SPIN: In Clintonese this means, if you don't like the Truth, CHANGE it.

Biden was great...a casualty of the media.

Btw, I don't think liberals are pissed that McCain is courting evangelicals. I think, and I know I don't speak for everyone, liberals are pissed at McCain because he's going to beat Hillary badly. Why are we seriously considering running the next John Kerry?

Obama, however, can, and will defeat McCain...if it gets to that. Don't worry my conservative friends, as you may have noticed, us liberal intellectuals aren't that smart.

What would
by degsme

What would "core principles" look like to you? How would you expect someone to demonstrate them?

I'm also curious if that's all there is to it. Afterall, the response to HRC seems to be an almost visceral hatred - Witness Sean Hannity's "Stop Hillary Express" that he has had going since 2005. Yet someone like Mitt Romney, who has a track record of many more changes in position, actually garners his support.

On Sincerity
by degsme

how would HRC have to behave to come across to you as sincere?

What has Obama done to signal to you that he is more sincere? Afterall it takes more than a touch of ambition to go from being a senator who owes the Clintons a lot for their support of his sentatorial candidacy, to challenging HRC directly for POTUS.

The examples you have given are judgment calls on your part, so clearly there was something in how she dealt with those circumstances that lead you to those (after all, staying with a husband that cheats on you for the good of your daughter is a reasonable decision, but one that you seem to have dismissed).

Do you see any contradiction in your two statements:

I'll have to think about why I think that -- is it because she's a woman? I hope not
o o o
we all know getting HRC in office is a way to get Bill back in office

How many of those ills
by degsme

How many of those ills that you cite do you believe will dissappear with Obama? Coulter, Hannity, Limbaugh are unlikely to give up their very lucrative careers. Similarly in the senate, do you really believe that the conservative Senators like James DeMint are going to give up their Cloture strategy because Obama has been elected?

Also, what makes you believe that HRC is part of the establishment? What has she said or done or proposed in her policies that conveys this to you? I ask because if you look at her stated policy papers, as a rule they are more liberal and supportive of lower wage earners than Obamas. So clearly there has to be something there to cause you to disbelieve those positions

Tolerance
by degsme
Hmm political correctness, tolerance and spin? Interesting that you attribute this to the Clintons. How familiar are you with Lee Atwater?
Re: Honest question

Bill back in the White House is enough to vote for Obama.
Re: Honest question
by middleview

I don't think McCain would beat me if I was the dem candidate. Last night's caucus in Colorado had an incredible turnout for dems and pretty mediocre for republicans. This is a red state, or was in 2000, was kind of purple in 2004 and will be blue in 2008. McCain lost here with a number that was far below the number of votes for Hillary and she only got 30% of the democratic vote. So if Hillary gets 38,000 votes in Colorado and McCain gets 10,000....how do you figure that he has a shot at winning. I agree this is only one state, but it looks that way nationwide. In California she got 2 million and McCain got 975k.....check the numbers from this link and see what you think.

Re: Honest question
by djyman15

I don't see Cali as a swing state...I think Arnold not coming out as a Democrat at this point is damn near akin to Clay Aiken not coming out...

But I think the mistake in calculation there is that its assumed that independents and somewhat conservative dems are split between hillary and Obama...in reality, it's Obama and McCain splitting them. Plus, once the right wing gets behind him, there's going to be some attacks that are pretty tough to defend. I also look for Hillary to make the mistake of being more pro-War to compete with McCain, which will keep people home.

Re: Tolerance
by PULEEZE!

I guess the Clintons (plural) didn't get the memo: James Carville, anyone?

In a February 1991 article for Life Magazine, Atwater declared:

"My illness helped me to see that what was missing in society is what was missing in me: a little heart, a lot of brotherhood. The '80s were about acquiring -- acquiring wealth, power, prestige. I know. I acquired more wealth, power, and prestige than most. But you can acquire all you want and still feel empty. What power wouldn't I trade for a little more time with my family? What price wouldn't I pay for an evening with friends? It took a deadly illness to put me eye to eye with that truth, but it is a truth that the country, caught up in its ruthless ambitions and moral decay, can learn on my dime. I don't know who will lead us through the '90s, but they must be made to speak to this spiritual vacuum at the heart of American society, this tumor of the soul. " written by Lee Atwater just prior to his death in 1991 to the victims of his multiple dirty tricks on behalf of Repubs.

None of the 'repubs' Atwater strategized for are asking us to re-elect them........HRC, however, is.

Bob Jones is voluntary
by degsme

Last I checked, enrollment in Bob Jones is entirely voluntary. And McCain had previously said about Bob Jones

“If I were there, I would condemn openly the policies of Bob Jones, because I would want to make sure that everybody knew that this kind of thing is not American.”

As well as

Get out of the 16th century and into the 21st century. What you’re doing is racist and cruel! Instead, Governor Bush went there and never said a word. I would never, ever do such a thing.”

Then more recently McCain said

"I can’t remember when I’ve turned down a speaking invitation. I think I’d have to look at it,"
o o o
"I understand they have made considerable progress,"

Now that's an indication of a willingness to pander and to compromise values. Had McCain said that he would still be willing to go talk at Bob Jones but that he would carry the same message as before, THAT would be consistent.

That's not even close to the same thing as negotiating with a legitimately elected government (Iran) or even one imposed by military force (Pakistan, Sudan) to improve relations as well as improve the plight of the general people.

The inconsistency is yours
