Re: Timely Ayn Rand books
by duck
Groups don't have rights; individuals have rights. Liberals (and conservatives) care about some rights but would rather others not have certain rights. Liberals tend to favor social rights but don't mind limitations on economic freedoms. Conservatives generally (but certainly not all) favor relatively high levels of economic freedom but often are bigoted against those with different social customs and don't mind laws which infringe on others' social liberties. Libertarians and Objectivists often struggle with the problem of externalities. Many libertarians stick their heads in the sand about issues like pollution. A more enlightened view I believe is that no one has the right to pollute anyone else but you can certainly pollute your own property. As a practical matter there is a need to have a system regulating pollution in such a way that economic activity can still take place. The U.S. Constitution does a poor job of dealing with this matter and should be amended to deal more squarely with the issue.
