The reference is to "Candide or All for the Best" by Votaire which chronicles the trails and tribulations of an optimistic young man and his friends and lover who has her buttock cut off and eaten by pirates and parodies the philosophy of Leibniz in the character if Dr Pangloss who like him says that we live in the best of all possible worlds which is a bit like our free marketers who endlessly remind us to be grateful to the rich for giving us our jobs (like God gives our daily bread) and that corporate farms are virtuous because t they insure more people (wow all of 25% of seasonal worker!) than the small farms being devoured by them but which for the most part only insure at all due to the efforts of unions they vilify while fighting against universal coverage becasue they might have to pay higher taxes. Funny that the conclusion of Candide is that we should just stop fighting and cultivate our garden but I think Voltaire was being ironic in that as well.
