Re: OK, 'fess up!
by stackey-ackey

Taste is subjective I suppose, because I think that tux looks damn good. It doesn't really look like a tux to me, more like a chocolate brown suit, but still, its nice. The lines are what make it; it's a classic, flattering cut and the only thing daring is the color.

Granted, it won't look good on everyone, and you should really take into account the complexions of everuone involved, but I like brown suits and robin's egg blue shirts. I guess you are one of those black suit is the only way to go folks.

I think it's funny that all of you don't want your wedding pictures to be dated. Your getting married in the 00's so why wouldn't you want it to look like you got married in the 00's? How cool will it be to look back with your daughter or grandaughter and laugh at how weird you dressed back then. Isn't that the point?

That would be horrible! Laughing at your ancesters' wedding attire is part of being a family!

(My parents? Mustard tuxedos and white guys with 'fros. Wedding date: 7/8/78)

Oh yeah. Laughing at family wedding pictures is like a bonding moment. My mothers dress was *shudder* and my dad was in a black tux, but all the groomsmen were in powder blue with the frothy shirts. Date 1972.

You know what - my mother was married during WW2, in a gorgeous navy blue silk suit, very very classic, very very 1940s. And a fab little cocktail hat with veiling down to her nose. When I was little, I was mad because her wedding portrait did not have her in a poufy white meringue thing, like all my friends' mothers.

When I grew up, I realized she was the classiest, most elegant bride I have ever seen. Never laughed once. There ARE classic, snicker proof, non-boring outfits out there. Very much of their time, but also timeless.

To put it delicately, that very good-looking black man in the ad looked really good in the brown suit. He's a model and he would probably look good in a lot of different-colored suits. That's his job. Have you seen the movie "Zoolander"?

An equally good-looking white man might not have looked so good. An ugly, chunky white man in that suit ... oy!

Sartorial choices

The brown tux is nothing, compared to the leisure suits of the 70's. I remember so vividly going to parties in the height of style in my pumpkin orange or lime green leisure suit with the ultra-wide collar paisley shirts. Worse, I still have some pictures to prove it did so. Now those are memories to make you go "brrr".

Dude, that came from a Dallas magazine....'nuff said.
In defense of brown suits . . .

I'm a caucasion with dark brown hair. Take a black suit and a chocolate (or darker) brown suit of identical cuts and fabric. I'll look washed out in the black and radiant in the brown.

Clothes, especially for a wedding, should be chosen to make people look as good as possible. If that means straying from tradition, so be it. (after all, most wedding traditions are ridiculous and anachronistic anyway.)

That sounds lovely.

But you know, most of us can only dream of attaining such timeless elegance. Many of us really can't tell a classic, snicker-proof. nonboring outfit from the latest trend-chasing soon-to-be-dismissed atrocity.. It's tragic. I weep.

Thusly we console ourselves: when our fashion choices come back to bite us in the butt, we will at least keep a sense of humor about it.

yes, you can be of the time and timeless...

...but not in a brown tuxedo, sorry. It will look cool now, but it's tomorrow's joke. Wear your colored tuxes to prom instead. Because unlike wedding pictures, which one would hopefully want to display for years, prom pics have a shelf life of one year.

Related observation: why is it that the people who blindly dive into the latest trends are the ones who are so sure they know how to dress everyone else? This is why I think the letter is fo' reals.

I thought it was the "blue won't go with brown and sage green" thing that made it fake. Since when does blue not go with brown.

Bridesmaids in sage green is sadistic.

Try sharkskin suits and sock ties. That's my generational horror. Mullets and high top fades just finish the comedy.

It's not that difficult.

There's a good reason the black tux is the one that has survived after so many decades. It's the classic. Same with the white dress for the bride; you can add puffy sleeves - or not; train, veil, seed pearls; it won't ever look dorky. If you find that all too boring, concentrate on your honeymoon. Don't mess with the basics.

Tell the wedding planner not to let the door slam on her behind as she leaves.

I get a kick out of The Reverend's pictures from his first wedding circa 1976. The girls are in yellow Gunne Sax prairie dresses with macrame chokers and Donna Fargo hairdos and the guys are in brown tuxes (with satin piping) and yellow frilly shirts. All that brown and yellow makes me think of a big platter of cheese enchiladas.

This reminds me to get ready for which ever of my kids decides to get married next.

I think the shiny lime green tux with Azalea pink shirt and white shoes and belt for the SO and something truly unique for me...

Ah the machinations of a mother used to show.
