You mentioned Bob Dylan. Alot of his songs or parts of his songs sound like something out of Ecclessiastes. Someone should devote a whole book to the topic of Bob Dylan and Ecclessiastes.
A realized the other day that maybe one of his most famous songs "Ballad of a Thin Man" has uased ecclesiastes.
The Thin Man was a dectective story written in the 1930s and made into 6 fims in the 1940s. The identity of the Thin Man is important. The Thin Man was assumed to be the detective but it turns out that it is indeed the murderer.
In Ecclessiastes the thin man is surely the fool who folds his arms(hands) and does nothing, consuming his own flesh. And it goes on to say that it is better to have one hand full with quiet than to have two hands full from much toil and chasing after the wind.
So both the person with nothing anmd alot are differnt types of fools, I guess you could say.
In Dylan's song we assume that the Thin Man is Mr Jones. I would say that perhaps Dylan the first person singer is the thin man and that Mr Jones is the other type of fool i just mentioned.
In some sense, I may be right or wrong, Dylan is saying although he recognizes that he himself is a fool, he can at least has some idea of what is going on and can see that Mr Jones is a fool for not knowing what is going on around him.
Any thoughts, comments?
