Young Men Acting Badly
by Woolley
I remain disgusted by the crudity of young men in these types of movies. If any of this actually happens in real life, I would expect, demand, that officers reprimand the soldiers immediately. It is a sign of our times that while they are being trained to fight, no one appeared to train them to be men not animals. The only true sentiment in the episode I watched was the line about the Marines taking your brain away and getting it back when you get out. I continue to be ashamed of men everywhere for our desire, our apparent need for bloodlust and death. The false power of being armed and part of a group is no different if its in a gang on 52nd street or in a battalion in Iraq. Morally, unless the behavior is different, the outcomes remain the same. Immature, insecure boys trying to be men but using the death and destruction of others as the stepping stone. If our troops actually behave this way, then our forces need new leaders. There is no excuse for some of the language and thoughts expressed in some of these scenes, none whatsoever. I cannot fathom that this would have been tolerated by the Captain the 101st airborne of "Band of Brothers" fame. That soldier was a true leader, man and human being.
