"Anne" is still popular
by MaryAnn

Reading the various posts from people reminiscing about having read the "Anne" books as children made me wonder if modern girls would still find her appealing.

I went to Amazon and discovered that a boxed set of several "Anne" books was # 2257 on their bestseller list, which I think is pretty high.

I also saw that the set had gotten over 180 reviews and an average score of 5 stars.

Based on those observations, it looks like "Anne" is, indeed, still popular. By the way, the books are recommended for ages 9 - 12.

The miniseries(es?) can only have helped, although I don't know how much of an impact the appalling third one had. The second combined several books, but at least seemed largely true to the spirit of Montgomery's books and characters.

My daughter is 19 and we read all of the Anne books aloud between ages 9-11, so I think she's still popular with today's girls.

I'll bet Anne is not THAT popular in Quebec. When Montgomery writes about French Canadians, she sounds as prejudiced as Margaret Mitchell.

The word "series" is like shrimp or sheep -- it can be a singular or plural noun.

"When Montgomery writes about French Canadians, she sounds as prejudiced as Margaret Mitchell."

Not as prejudiced, but LM certainly was a snob - and Anne is, too, in certain ways. It's a mark of the book's strength, however, that this snobbery - based within a time and a period of 100 years ago - can be transcended through the beauty and insight of the writing.

We can't expect authors to be perfect. Picasso was brutal to his women, I hear - but that doesn't mean I am less amazed at his genius.
