absolutely the worst
by uharugger

Listen don't say that isn't one of the worst jobs unless you have worked at a daycare/ preschool.

Ive worked at a daycare as a 2yr toddler teacher for the past year. After college i didn't know exactly what i wanted to do so i took a filler job. working at a daycare was the worst idea. Especially at a NAEYC accredited center. Pretty well much that means that you absolutely HAVE to have a college degree or be working towards some type of degree to work there but still get paid barely above minimun wage with no room for improvement. I worked at a center where we would work from 7 am to 5:30-6pm and if we had a staff meeting we would be there till 8-9 at night depending on what we were discussing. The children that we took care of were lets say privilaged. We watched rich kids and some of those children would be there every day from 7am to 6pm. Besides everything that she mentioned in the article if you work at a NAEYC accredited center there is boatloads of paperwork for everychild that you have to do. We would have to do 20+ reports a day depending on how many kids were there + all the milestones, their daily report cards, accident reports and the list goes on. And honestly the parents were rediculous there were only a couple that were down to earth and knew how to raise a child, the others didn't really care to learn how to take care of their children, we were doing it for them.

There were days that were rewarding. The kids that i was responsible for I was able to teach them to count in french and spanish They actually retained that information and used it in other aspects of their day. Those are the moments that make you make you actually like the job.

But in reality, working in a childcare center can not be compared to any construction job or bs job on the side because you do need a college education to clean up poop, vomit, pee, boogers, blood and any other disgusting thing you can think of. This center also charged an arm and a leg for their kids to go there. My classroom was 1,147 a month. Not including any extra activities that were going on, those were extra. They do not pay the workers enough money and they deserve a lot more respect.

I just want to comment that being NAEYC accredited made working at a center worse. It does require a higher level of education and continued training that most state licensure. However, having just recently completed the revised standards, there are reasons for the requirements that are directly related to trying to increase the quality in group programs that everyone seems to complain about. The standards are documentation extensive, but accountabilty is one of the best ways to improve quality. Child care should not be about just basic physical needs.
