And yeah, the whole is is was pure semantics, especially in the realm of legalese, where murder's have gone free on less ambiguity in the definition of is. It can mean "exist" or "occur" or "be situated" or "remain".

So, if it's that simple, then what is "is"? And just to help you out, here is the sentence you are most probably alluding to.

"There's nothing going on between us."
