What's with the "Don't mess with the game people" attitude?

Shouldn't it have been, "Don't publish articles that stink?"
Claiming it has something to do with the "game people" and not with the article's quality, is a little disingenuous.
Following the link, I read through the gaming articles and the commentaries, and while I have little idea what the original D&D was all about (besides what I can guess from computer derivatives), one thing stands totally clear: Most of the posters were making very valid points. Even without knowing the details of D&D, I do know that you can't blame the inventor of fire because he failed to simultaneously invent child-proof lighters. Practically every other argument also made sense. E.g. it make total sense that too many rules restrict creativity, too few rules fail to build substance. It also seems fair that you should't blame your lack of imagination on somebody who built a nice framework for you.
Maybe the attitude of many of the posters was hostile at times. But then again, the article asked (heck, demanded, practically at gunpoint) for hostile responses. If you are going to write something that controversial, you are expected to do your homework first.
