I wouldn't call this "eco-tourism"
by buggie
I've studied eco-tourism, and this isn't it, by definition. What this trip describes is just tourism. If it were true "eco-tourism" there wouldn't be any shark-baiting and the like. It would employ locals. True eco-tourism is a very good thing by definition. This trip to Hounduras is not an example of it. Perhaps the government is trying to promote it as such, perhaps the tourists are trying to tell themselves that it is, but it isn't being done right, that's for sure.

"True eco-tourism is a very good thing, by definition."

That's one way to solve a problem - define it away.

"Lower taxes are a good thing, by definition."

"Fewer abortions are a good thing, by definition."

"Less immigration is a good thing, by definition."

fine, maybe I should have been more explicit than "good thing." Eco-tourism, by definition, is tourism that is sustainable, promotes conservation, and results in economic benefits to the community. Eco-tourism is not just enjoying the outdoors in a specific location.
