Western Culture Has Been Christian For Over 1800 Years

While I do feel that much of what is passed off for Christian entertainment nowadays lacks artistic integrity, there are many Christian musicians and artists that are incredibly gifted. They should not be lumped in with this Christian commercialism that is being spoken of in this book.

That being said, it always baffles my mind that there never seems to be a discussion of how the roots of our culture, whether it be in the world of music or in the visual arts or whatever, are based in the realm of Christian culture. Anyone who has studied the history of music, art, literature, architecture or any of the other arts can see the overarching theme of spirituality in every aspect of the arts, not to mention the influence of the church (sometimes good sometimes bad) in anything that we hold dear as part of our cultural history. These themes and ideas even appear in what are considered some of the best that the modern era hads to offer, wether rejecting them or wrestling with them. The higher ideas of humanity's salvation, the purpose of life, creation and our Creator have permeated our culture for millenia. It is strange to me that many of those who still express these timeless ideas in new ways in their art are looked down upon, instead of the comedian who isn't creative enough to be funny without being vulgar.
